Despite the album’s distinctly French influences and sound, Brol is clearly a first release that looks outwards. There is even a piano ballad, “Nombreux”, which reveals some of Angèle’s more traditional inspirations such as Serge Gainsbourg and George Brassens. In “Tout Oublier”, the singer’s brother Roméo Elvis, Brussels-based hip-hop artist also makes an appearance.

And “Ta reine” tells a story of closeted homosexual love and desire in the face of a hostile and prejudiced environment where social progress is the only hope. Even the French equivalent of the #MeToo movement, Balance ton porc, gets its own song: “Balance ton quoi”, a confident and hopeful ode to the end of sexism.

A great deal of Angèle’s lyrics are characterised by the portrayal of a landscape of superficial individualism, the struggles of insecurity, jealousy, hypocrisy, internet fame and instagram accounts, making the 23 year-old’s songs highly relatable to her generational peers.
